Hello, DHSCV Members!
Did you know we have a second annual event, the Desert Garden Community Day? Well, we do and it’s coming soon! October 28, 2017 at the UCR Palm Desert Campus.
You can read all about this year’s amazing event line-up, but right now I’m looking to bring on new DHSCV Volunteers to help make this event just as special as in years past.
Here’s the scoop!
Time commitment: A couple of hours on Friday, October 27th for orientation and a few hours (or more if you want) on Saturday October 28th. Orientation is NOT mandatory, but is strongly recommended if you’ve not volunteered at UCR Palm Desert yet.
Volunteer Opportunities and Shifts
Vendor / Sponsor Support and Greeter (Inside). Help them get organized when they’re setting up in the morning, help them throughout the day if they have needs. Greet our guests as they move through the vendor and sponsor area. Shifts are 7:30am – 10:30am and 10:30am – 2:00pm. We’d like two volunteers for each shift.
Greeter (Outside). Welcome our guests and help them find their way. Shifts are 8:15am – 11:00am and 11:00am – 2:00pm. We’d like two volunteers for each shift.
Greeter (Inside). There will be a welcome booth at the entrance to the building staffed by one member of each organization (DHSCV, Master Gardeners, and UCCE/UCR). Shifts are 8:00am – 11:00am and 11:00am – 2:00pm. We need one volunteer for each shift.
Room Ambassador (Inside). Welcome our guests and answer any event questions they might have before/after the lecture. Be able to find the UCR staff who can troubleshoot A/V issues if they arise. Make sure the speaker has everything they need to be successful. A DHSCV Board Member will also be assigned to each classroom event. Shifts are 9:30am – 11:45am and 11:30am – 1:45pm. We need two volunteers for each shift.
Vermiculture Assistant (Inside). We’re offering a super nifty hands-on Vermicomposting lecture this year! We need someone who can assist our lecturer with setting up and in-class troubleshooting for our guests. No experience required. Shift is 9:00am – 1:00pm. We need one person for this, but we’re happy to have two!
Kids Program (Outside). This year we’ll have three hands-on classes for elementary-school aged children. We’re looking for two volunteers who love working with kids, butterflies, and potting plants. Shift is 9:30am – 1:00pm.
Floaters (Anywhere and Everywhere). This role is for someone who is active and willing to do just about anything that might come up. You might fill in for any of the above opportunities or we might find we have other needs that arise. A can-do, team-player attitude is all that’s needed for this role. Shifts are 8:00am – 11:00pm and 11:00am – 2:00pm. We’d like two volunteers for each shift.
Notice something different about these shifts? The times are all over the place! That’s by design. Instead of having everyone show up at once, we’re staggering your arrivals around when each program needs help. We also tried to keep the shifts on the shorter side where possible, allowing you to enjoy some of the wonderful events, too!
You’ll check in with the DHSCV booth when you arrive for your shift and get any last-minute updates that apply.
Please let me know by the end of the day on October 6th if you plan to volunteer for this special event.
Thank you so much, future Volunteers!
